A Commission

The Brief
An emerald-cut aquamarine. A twentieth anniversary. The brief was: something different.
First sketches
The first sketches followed the brief. Open rings, spiral rings, the stone read clearly. They didn’t quite arrive.
Second direction
A second direction came in. The aquamarine stayed; an element of flora was introduced. Still missing.
The conversation
Halfway through the design, the studio put the sketches down. Two options had been drawn; neither carried the client. We sat with the client, not about the ring, but about her: about what this ring actually symbolised, her life, her love, her family, what twenty years had taught her, what she carried. The conversation gave the ring its focus.
The peony emerges
The Peony emerged. An emerald-cut aquamarine alongside a flower in full bloom. Each element coded with something specific to the conversation: connection, heritage, strength alongside vulnerability. The studio hasn’t named which detail means what. That part stays between the client and the piece.
